You know the moment.
Ten minutes into pronunciation practice, “three” finally sounds right. Five minutes later, the /θ/ starts slipping toward /t/ again. You repeat it. It gets worse. You repeat it again because the exercise says you have eight attempts left.
That counter does not know you are tired.
Good English pronunciation practice depends on your ability to hear a difference, make a precise adjustment, and judge the result. Once fatigue starts interfering with that loop, extra repetitions can lose much of their value.
You can practice pronunciation while mildly tired if you can still hear differences and make deliberate corrections. When your attention drops, your speech becomes inconsistent, or you keep repeating an error you could correct earlier, intensive pronunciation drills have probably reached their useful limit.
Research on fatigue and motor learning remains limited, so there is no scientific cutoff such as “stop after 15 minutes.” Quality is the better guide.
Pronunciation looks like a speaking task. Underneath, several processes are working together:
hear → plan → move → listen → compare → adjust
You hear the target sound. Your brain plans the movement. Your tongue, lips, jaw, and voice produce it. Then you compare your result with the target and change the next attempt.
That final part matters.
If you are still saying a word but have stopped making useful adjustments, you have moved from pronunciation training into simple repetition.
Fatigue can make that shift surprisingly easy to miss.
Direct research on fatigue during second-language pronunciation practice is still sparse. Broader motor-learning research, speech studies, and sleep research give us a more careful picture.

The important scientific caveat is simple: fatigue does not affect every learner or every motor task in the same way.
A 2026 scoping review found only 25 relevant motor-learning studies, with inconsistent definitions and results. Just seven examined fatigue produced through cognitive exertion.
So the research supports a quality-based stop rule much better than a universal timer.
Imagine you are practicing “three.”
Attempt 1: your /θ/ sounds close to /t/.
Attempt 3: better.
Attempt 6: clear.
Attempt 12: /t/ returns.
Attempt 15: you hear the error but cannot reliably change it.
Attempt 16 has no special value simply because it is next.
Useful pronunciation repetition contains information:
error → adjustment → clearer production
A fatigued session can start looking like:
error → same error → same error → frustration
At that point, stopping is part of the practice strategy.
This is where the research becomes more interesting.
In the 2024 speech-motor study mentioned above, participants practiced producing two unfamiliar Danish vowels. Active training pushed their productions closer to the Danish targets.
Then something happened while they were doing nothing.
After a period of rest, their productions became less variable, even without additional practice.
Research on speech perception also suggests that consolidation can happen after training. English speakers trained on unfamiliar speech contrasts have shown changes after sleep, although sleep effects vary depending on the task, timing, and interference between training and sleep.
So ending a pronunciation session does not mean learning suddenly stops.
Sometimes the useful work has already been done.
There is no research-backed perfect length for a daily pronunciation practice routine.
Five focused minutes can be useful. Twenty minutes can be useful. The better question is whether your English pronunciation feedback loop is still working.
Continue while you can:
Hear the difference between your attempt and the target.
Identify the problem with reasonable confidence.
Make a deliberate adjustment.
Tell whether the adjustment helped.
When those four steps repeatedly break down, finish the intensive drill.
This gives you a much better rule:
End the session when the quality of correction drops, not when the clock tells you to stop.
You can lower the difficulty.
Precise production drills demand a lot from your attention and speech-motor system. If those drills are becoming messy, switch to something lighter, such as reviewing a pronunciation explanation or listening to familiar examples.
And some days, finish completely.
There is no bonus point for turning ten good repetitions into thirty tired ones.
Pronunciation feedback is most useful while you can still respond to it.

Research does not establish one ideal session length. Speech learning depends on the task, learner, target sound, feedback, and practice quality. A focused session that ends while you are still monitoring your speech well can be more useful than a longer session filled with unfocused repetitions.
Fatigue can reduce performance during practice, but research does not justify claiming that one tired session permanently teaches a pronunciation mistake. A safer concern is simpler: low-quality repetitions give you fewer useful opportunities to detect, correct, and stabilize the target.
Some research shows that sleep and post-practice rest can support aspects of speech perception and speech-motor consolidation. Results vary across studies, so sleep works best as part of a broader learning process rather than as a shortcut for practice.
